The new SETI Centre at St Mary’s is a three-storey building designed for project-based learning, with the space and equipment of a professional environment. The school needed a film to launch the public phase of its capital campaign and get the whole St Mary’s community behind it.
Two minutes, no talking heads, building to the campaign line: ignite her future. The catch was that the building didn’t exist yet. Half the story had to come from the architect’s 3D renders, and the other half from real students.
A Year 4 student lights a Bunsen burner and a spark breaks free. She chases it through the school, meeting senior girls in marine science, chemistry, VR, sustainability and scuba diving, until it leads her into the SETI Centre. The spark ties every scene together without a word of explanation.
We developed the storyboard and shot list together with client, covering talent, props and safety gear for each. The schedule fit eight scenes into two early mornings so classes weren’t disrupted.
Tracking and handheld camerawork keeps the video moving, with key moments shot in slow-motion, along with some drone and action-cam footage.
The spark is a 3D effect composited into the footage and tracked to the student’s movements. A cinematic score carries the message, building to the final line: “ignite her future”.
A two-minute campaign film that gets a community excited about a building they can’t walk into yet, and gives them a reason to help build it.
